The Oxford English Dictionary is one of the most comprehensive and authoritative dictionaries of the English language. This reference and scholarly resource, with a tradition spanning more than 150 years, contains approximately 600,000 words and 3.5 million quotations from books, newspapers, academic publications, scripts and other sources. It also traces the development of English vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation and includes regional varieties, for example from Australia and India.
Users can use the OED in particular for:
- checking the meaning, origin and usage of English words;
- tracing the historical development of vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation;
- working with regional vocabulary and different varieties of English;
- searching with the AI Search Assistant, which allows users to ask questions in natural language;
- finding historical examples with the experimental AI Quotations Finder, which displays examples of word usage from the EarlyPrint Library corpus (1473–1800).
